Jorge Masvidal cuts 20 pounds in six days, Fight is Officially on

It has been an eventful week for Jorge Masvidal, to say the least. Just six days ago UFC Fight Island did not have a main event. Masvidal stepped in on late notice and took the fight. Several obstacles had to be faced.

First, Jorge needed to test negative for COVID-19. The test came back negative but the hardest obstacle still lied ahead, the weight cut. If you thought the 20-pound weight cut in six days would be hard, then you would be correct.

Masvidal had to cut 20 pounds in six days to make the 170-pound championship weight. Drastic measures had to be taken. Masvidal dehydrated himself to the point of physical and mental exhaustion. Today, both fighters made the 170-pound championship mark and the fight is now officially on for tomorrow.

During a media scrum, Masvidal gave his thoughts on the weight cut.

“Twenty pounds in six days,” Masvidal said when asked how difficult it was to make weight. “That’s all I’m gonna say. It was rough. But I did it. I get sh*t done.”

Now that the weight cut is over, Masvidal can now focus on the task at hand. He will look to dethrone the undefeated champion, Kamaru Usman. Jorge seems to be very confident.

“The opponent in front of me is very tameable, so I never thought like that,” Masvidal said when asked if he had any doubts about taking this fight on short notice. “I’m hurting though, initially during the weight cut, but now it’s all behind me. I made the weight, I’ve already got liquids in me, food in me, so pretty soon it’ll be just party time.”

“We’re gonna need a lot longer than five minutes for that answer, but I’ll give you a short one,” Masvidal said. “Stick to your guns, don’t let none of these devils and demons hold you down. I’ve been here for a while, it’s taken me a while, but I don’t let know oppressor get the better of me. If they didn’t come to the numbers that I wanted, I would have been right in Miami, Florida, sitting on my couch, eating sushi, playing video games. They came correct and that’s why I’m here. That’s the only thing I can tell young fighters coming up, know your value.

“A lot of the young guys just don’t know their value. It’s not their fault. I didn’t know my value when I was 19, 20 years old. Someone offered me $2,000 I’d kill a gorilla. It’s tough as these kids are coming up, but all I can tell them is know your value and stick to your guns.”

Dana White announced that numbers for this fight card are trending as high as a Conor McGregor fight, Masvidal had an explanation for that.

“You know why?” Masvidal said. “‘Cause I’m on the motherfu**in’ card.”
