Octagon Report Fight Recap: Woodley vs. Burns

(Essentially Sports)

It was a coming out party for Gilbert Saturday night. The story line for this past weekend’s main event was the up and coming hungry fighter facing the former champion.

The former champ, Tyron Woodley, came out in great shape determined to win and get back on track and get back into the win column on his journey to get his belt back.

Gilbert came out looking to make a statement. Burns came out the gate blazing and blitzed Woodley with a few heavy punches. Woodley got caught  with a right hand and uppercut, which had him on his back 30 seconds into the fight. Gilbert got mount and it  seemed as though it was going to be an early night.

But you can never count out the former champ Woodley withstood the early storm and made it past the first round.

The fight remained mostly the same with Gilbert backing up Woodley and out striking him while getting a pair of takedowns. Gilbert kept the constant pressure and controlled the pace of the fight.

Woodley was coming off a one year layoff and had a few questions to answer. How was he going to respond to a one year layoff? Burns came into his first main event fight. He was not even in the conversation for title contention 48 hours ago but now he is in the mix.

He has somewhat become the dark horse of the welterweight division. Both fighters came into the fight on paper virtually identical. Both with great striking and both with great ground game. Did one guy want to be in there more than the other? Was that the intangible?

The fight had two takedowns and both went to Gilbert. Woodley was hurt badly during the first few two minutes of the fight  and any other referee might have stopped the fight. The former champ got up and came back into the fight. Going into the fifth round Woodley needed a finish being down 4 rounds to 0.

After the fight, UFC President, Dana White, came out and threw a few names out in line next for the title, he mentioned Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, and Leon Edwards. Gilbert tells Dana he is ready to go again. Burns took to twitter and tweeted, “I just ate but I’m still very HUNGRY! Fight Island?”
