“I held him down and beat the s**t out of him”- Conor McGregor’s coach reveals shocking training story
Conor McGregor and his coach John Kavanagh are one of the most accomplished duos in Mixed Martial Arts.
The pair have witnessed several iconic moments inside the octagon alongside each other.
However, there were days when they weren’t so keen on each other. Coach Kavanagh shared a story when Mcrgefor first started MMA.
Kavanagh revealed how he once beat up McGregor in a training session.
John Kavanagh gave Conor McGregor a tough-time
Conor was just getting started with his MMA journey and was still new to the SBG gym at the time.
Speaking to the Irish Mail, McGregor’s coach recalled a bizarre moment in training.
It dates back to 2017 when McGregor dropped a women’s strawweight contender Aisling Daly in sparring with a body shot.
That proved costly for Conor as Kavanagh took him to the ground and beat the “s***” out of him.
“It sounds worse than it was. He wasn’t hitting her in the head or anything, but just happened to throw a body shot that hit her in the sweet spot, the solar plexus, and put her down,” said Kavanagh.
Ths Irish trainer instantly turned emotional as he claims he was close with Ailing Daly and seeing her go down by the new contender didn’t sit well with him.
Kavanagh was also a competitive fighter at that point and decided to lace up his gloved to teach McGregor a lesson.
“I held him down and beat the s**t out of him, without putting too fine a point on it.
“I kept hitting him in the body until he couldn’t breathe and then I looked at him: ‘What’s it going to be? We can train or we can fight?’ And he was OK from the next day,” told the coach.
Kavanagh has been McGregor’s trainer since then and the duo now shares a healthy relationship.
While McGregor remains retired, if he returns again there is no doubt that Kavanagh will be in his corner.
