Octagon Report’s Matchmaker Tuesdays
It’s that time of the week again, matchmaker tuesdays. Today we will cover potential matchups that could derive from last weekend’s UFC 250 card.
The ufc has already announced several fights for “Fight Island.”
The UFC bantamweight division is one of the hottest divisions in the sport right now.
Following Henry Cejudo’s retirement, the division is wide open.
Top UFC bantamweight prospect, “Sugar Sean O’Malley,” is coming off a walk-off KO of UFC veteran Eddie Wineland. The “Sugar Show” is looking to keep the hype train chugging along. He called out former bantamweight Cody Garbrandt, who is also coming off a walk-off KO.
Sean mentioned in a chat with ESPN MMA’s Ariel Helwani, ‘Sugar’ said, “There’s no way he takes that fight, there’s no way he takes it. It’s a lose-lose for him.”
He goes on to explain his reasoning, “One, he’s probably gonna get knocked out and two it’s like he’s fighting someone that has a lot of hype, but if he beats me people will say aw…”
‘Sugar’ reiterates his earlier point, “But it’s a lose-lose for him I feel so. I’m sure that he’d avoid that fight.”
When asked if he would take it O’Malley looked supremely confident as he said, “Yea absolutely, 100%. I feel like I would knock Cody out.”
The first match up to make would be Sean O’Malley vs. Cody Gardbrandt.
Aljamain Sterling is another bantamweight who is coming off a big win last weekend.
Aljamin is now ranked No. 2 in the division. The next matchup to make is
winner of (Jose Aldo vs. Petr Yan) vs. Aljamain Sterling
The UFC has announced several fights for the upcoming fight island cards. We now have a title fight for at bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and heavyweight.
The UFC is currently working on a fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Justin Gaethje for the lightweight title.
This leaves many fighters without a fight. This may have caused the retirement of Conor McGregor. Conor stated he was tired and the game did not excite him.
“The game just does not excite me and that’s that,” he said in an exclusive interview.
Jorge Masvidal was also next in line for the welterweight belt and is now on the sidelines.
A potential fight to make would be Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 3 or Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz 2.
